Before I start inspiring the perfect and above all free Mother's Day gift, I would like to briefly discuss the origin of Mother's Day itself. Although the original Mother's Day dates back to ancient Greece, the day as we know it today came over from America. In 1870, the American Julia Ward How launched a major publicity campaign to set aside a day for the celebration of disarmament and pacifism.
Unfortunately, the breakthrough for this day did not come until 1907, when Anne Marie Jarvis, also American, began to honor her mother during the Buger War. Not just a tribute, because her mother had taken care of other mothers during the war by providing medicines and goods. Fortunately, this act did not go unnoticed. In 1914, US President Woordrow Wilson decided to declare the second Sunday in May Mother's Day.
Not much later in 1925 this tradition blown over from America to the Netherlands, where this day was seized with both hands. In the Netherlands, the second Sunday in May is also observed as Mother's Day. Other countries, including Belgium, celebrate Mother's Day on a different date.
By now you will be curious about how you can surprise your mother for free. Here are my ideas:
