Decorating the adolescent room has been quite a thing here in the house. As I described in a previous blog, Luc has absolutely no need to furnish his room. In fact… he makes a horrible mess of it and it doesn't interest him at all, haha. Seems like puberty to me. But I can't resist and started decorating his room a few months ago. So it's not going that fast, I admit, but that's also because it's not the only project here in the house.

To start with, I painted the dark scrap ceiling a few months ago and made the walls fresh white. That was urgently needed because nothing had happened to this room since we lived here (now more than 18 months). oops. Step one, so far so good. And now the rest. New lamps, nice hexagon photos on the wall, different wall decoration, painting the window frame, hanging curtains and so on.
Fortunately, his bed can last a while. He sleeps in our old bed with a new mattress, so he has a nice big bed in his room. Bizarre really, because I really slept in a single bed my whole youthful life. Our children, on the other hand, both already have a double bed. Admittedly a doubter, but still with a lot of space.
When furnishing the adolescent room, we do not have to take a desk into account. We have plenty of room downstairs in our office for desks for the kids to study so their bedroom is really just for sleeping. I think it's nice in terms of space, although a desk can also ensure that you really have your own space in the house.
However, with the large beds in their bedrooms, there is less room for a desk. Lotte has a dressing table in her adolescent room as decoration and for Luc I will look for a hanging sideboard for under his hexagons. Something small with drawers for underwear and socks, for example.
Now that we're tackling his entire bedroom, I also like to take a good look at the lighting. I prefer not to have standing lamps, but as much as possible on the wall and ceiling as a hanging lamp. For the logical reason that that again saves clutter on the ground. And the emptier the floor is, the easier it is to clean. Even though an empty floor in an adolescent room is quite a challenge, it still makes a difference. Until now there was a floor lamp, but the amount of dust that collects every time around the base of that lamp, brrr.
Luc needs a wall lamp above his wardrobe so that he can put his night lenses in it. His wardrobe is only 1.20 high and he has his lens gear on top of it, but good light is very important there. And a wall lamp next to his bed is also nice, of course. I have therefore opted for two identical lamps, so that there is more unity in his adolescent room when decorating. Nice lights, with such a cool leather suspension system.
In our case, I thought it was important to furnish Luc's adolescent room in such a way that it has a cool touch, yet looks cozy and is not too stylish. More because Luc has such an attitude of… act normal then it is crazy enough. He doesn't say 'I only sleep there' for nothing. And that is true, but that does not mean that it is nice if it looks cozy. His adolescent room is therefore not completely styled, but the use of sturdy materials makes it look a bit industrial. And the photos and plants make it cozy again.
The tips below are useful to make decorating a teenage room cozy and practical. Keep them in mind when you start working on your adolescent's room.
As described above, a large bed is completely 'the bomb'. And not only for teenagers, but also teenagers will be happy in their teenage room. If you have the space for it, that is definitely a plus.
Keeping the room clean is one of the biggest challenges for a teenager. It is therefore important that we help them to keep the mess to a minimum. Not by always tidying up, but by thinking along in a practical design. Enough cupboard space is therefore important and the tip I gave above with regard to replacing, for example, standing lamps with hanging lamps also helps. Also consider a floor lamp on a bedside table. Before you know it, there's all kinds of junk on top of that nightstand and then try to keep it clean.
Storage space is important to keep lying around as little as possible. Closet space for the clothes of course, but also think of drawers or cupboards for, for example, the school bag, laptop or books. I also like to work with baskets on the cupboards where smaller messes can be thrown in. Luc has a basket for his lenses and a basket on the bedside table is also a good idea.
I don't know about you, but when decorating our teenager's room, a laundry basket was also on the list. A laundry basket of its own making it just as easy to toss in your sweater as it is to simply step out of your clothes and drop them on the floor. Another advantage:the laundry basket can be used as a basketball net:let your child score with his clothes 😉 .
Work with steel and wood and you will soon have a cool look for the adolescent room. And with such a cool stone wall like the one below (also available in wallpaper form) you make it really cool!
